The principle of peels is very ancient, as traces of them have been found on papyri dating back to the Egypt of the pharaohs. Today, they are a key procedure for entering the world of aesthetic medicine, where they literally allow you to renew your skin.
In this article, we focus on so-called chemical peels and not on mechanical peels (or scrubs) such as those performed with apricot kernels or horsehair gloves. These chemical peels are medical procedures, the effects of which can be enhanced by specific treatments from FILORGA Laboratories.
What you need to know about facial peels, in a few words
- There are two types of peels: mechanical (manual exfoliation, etc.) and chemical. It is this last category that we focus on in this article.
- Chemical peels range from superficial to very deep treatments.
- Chemical peels help – among other things – regenerate the skin, fade certain lesions, and restore evenness and radiance to the complexion.
- Filorga Laboratories offer several treatments that can be used alongside aesthetic medicine procedures or on their own.
What exactly does a facial peel do?
With age or due to environmental factors, cell renewal slows down. This process involves the removal of dead cells from the epidermis, the outer layer of the skin, allowing new cells to rise to the surface.
The skin, like all organs in the human body, is constantly renewing itself. This natural regeneration occurs throughout life and is crucial for:
Maintaining a radiant complexion.
... Protective against pathogenic microorganisms and various external aggressions (cold, pollution, UV rays, etc.).
Through the action of chemical agents, Peels therefore stimulate the elimination of dead cells from the superficial layers of the skin. Part of the epidermis is then destroyed, creating a sort of controlled wound that the body will heal once the cosmetic procedure is complete. Many factors influence the depth of the peel, such as the active ingredients used and the medical technique employed. There are three types, which the healthcare professional will recommend based on each patient's specific case. These peels are performed with Alpha and Beta Hydroxy Acids (AHA and BHA). They have an action ranging from: The result is a thinning of the stratum corneum, an increase in the thickness of the epidermis, and a more uniform distribution of melanin. In practice, this translates to:
Four treatments, spaced 15 days to 1 month apart, are generally recommended. The results are immediate and last 1 to 2 years. This procedure can be performed on any skin type, but is only indicated for superficial processes such as sun-induced aging (photoaging), light spots, or acne. It generally does not require local anesthesia and causes only mild discomfort. Medium-depth peels penetrate down to the reticular dermis, the second layer of the dermis. More powerful than superficial peeling, it accelerates cell renewal by boosting collagen and elastin production. It also causes a rearrangement of collagen fibers, which visibly rejuvenates the skin. The medium peel also exfoliates the epidermis. This technique: The most commonly used active ingredient in this procedure is trichloroacetic acid (TCA). Because it is so powerful, onlyone session per year

The medium peel goes further in treating skin conditions than the superficial peel. As such, it is much more aggressive for skin tissue, and while its effects are remarkable, it should be noted that recovery time is longer (the skin continues to peel for up to a week) and there is a risk of burns or depigmented scars.
Deep Peels
This type of procedure is no longer widely used becauseit damages the skin too much and has too significant an impact on the structure of the skin tissue. We won't dwell on this point here.
Some General Recommendations
As you've noticed, peels are not light procedures. As such, they require certain precautions.
Therefore, you should not:
- Perform a peel in the summer, as the skin will then be too fragile to withstand the sun's rays, which could lead to serious complications.
- Use several products containing acids or retinol at the same time to prevent the cocktail effect and avoid sensitizing the skin.
However, after a peel, you shouldalways useUV protection, even in winter, in gray or rainy weather, and for the entire duration recommended by the doctor who performed the procedure.
