Dark circles under the eyes are a major concern for many people of all ages, both women and men. They age and darken the face, making it appear tired and stressed, and robbing it of its radiance.
In this article, the skin experts at Laboratoires FILORGA explain the different causes of dark circles and offer their best advice for getting rid of them.
We also detail some of the active ingredients we use in our formulas and explain their usefulness in treating dark circles.
Removing and reducing dark circles: the essentials in a few lines
- Many factors can lead to the appearance of dark circles, such as insufficient blood flow to the eye area, excessive sun exposure, and aging. skin or lifestyle.
- There are different types of dark circles: blue circles, brown circles, hollow circles, and "puffiness".
- To reduce dark circles, proper cleansing and skincare application are very important.
- Filorga Laboratories use different active ingredients depending on the causes and types of dark circles. Find them at the end of this article.
What are the causes of dark circles?
Dark circles under the eyes, or periorbital hyperpigmentation, affect all skin types and are very difficult to treat in aesthetic medicine because their causes are multiple and vary from one individual to another. They can be the result of:
- poor blood flow, because with fatigue and age, microcirculation is less efficient and the walls of the capillaries deteriorate. This causes blood pigments (including bilirubin, produced by the natural breakdown of hemoglobin) to leak into the tissues. Around the eyes, where the skin is less vascularized, drainage becomes more difficult and pigments concentrate there more easily.
- Fromexcessive sun exposure. UV rays increase the skin's secretion of melanin, and the accumulation of this pigment associated with tanning can eventually form dark circles under the eyes. Since the under-eye area is one of the areas of the face with the thinnest skin, spots of this type will be more visible than in other parts of the body.
- A shadow effect is linked to a loss of structure around the eye. As we age, the fat in the infraorbital skin tends to disappear, leading to a loss of volume and elasticity in this area. This creates a shadow in the hollow formed where tears pass. These dark circles are often only visible from a certain angle and light and can be masked by a camera flash.
- Froman inadequate lifestyle. While lack of sleep, smoking, or stressare not considered physiological causes of the appearance of dark circles under the eyes, they can nevertheless accentuate the phenomenon.
- Medical conditions such asasthma or allergies*. Even if cosmetic treatments won't have an effect on these causes, it may be important to check whether they contribute to or are the cause of dark circles.
Knowing the Different Types of Dark Circles
They are generally classified according to their color:
-
Blue circles. Also called vascular circles, they appear as a pronounced blue-purple tint under the eyes. They are directly linked to microscopic blood and lymphatic circulation problems. They are among the most common.
-
Dark circles. Although their causes are not the same as those for bluish dark circles, brown dark circles (or pigmented dark circles) can have a yellow to brown tint caused by a concentration of melanin under the skin.
Two factors contribute to the appearance of these spots around the eyes: the thinness of the skin, mentioned above, combined with exposure to ultraviolet rays.
What are the differences between puffiness and dark circles?
If Dark circles are characterized by a change in skin color under the eye. Bags or puffiness under the eyes appear as a bulging appearance under the lower (and sometimes upper) eyelid. They give a "bag" or edema-like appearance, without any noticeable change in skin color. They result from an accumulation of fat or fluid, often linked to:
-
Sagging skin.
-
Poor lymphatic drainage.
-
To the natural aging process.
Bags under the eyes can be aggravated by water retention, heredity, or certain lifestyles.
The right actions to combat dark circles and bags under the eyes
Start with a gentle cleansing
Before even applying a concealer, it's very important to thoroughly cleanse your skin. This will remove all traces of external pollution and prepare it for your treatment. If you need to remove makeup, we recommend our FILORGA makeup remover, specially formulated to soothe and hydrate your skin at the end of the day.
Use very gentle movements to avoid damaging your eye area. Applying too much pressure could make your dark circles more visible by damaging the blood vessels located just below the skin. A quality concealer cream, if applied incorrectly, will not achieve its full potential. To get the most out of your FILORGA product, we recommend that our customers:
As we mentioned at the beginning of this article, dark circles are very difficult to treat with aesthetic medicine. Fortunately, certain cosmetic ingredientslike those found in the skincare products in our rangeOPTIM-EYES are very effective and can help reduce the buildup of pigment deposits or strengthen the capillary network. Let's discover them together. This essential ingredient in cosmetics is known forits ability to retain water and intensely hydrate skin tissue. It improves skin suppleness, restores volume, and smooths fine lines and wrinkles. At FILORGA, we use different forms of hyaluronic acid (low and high molecular weight) to hydrate, fill wrinkles, and reduce fine lines. Naturally present in passionflower, chrysin Promotes the elimination of pigments responsible for dark under-eye discoloration. This polyphenol thus acts to reduce the bluish or brown tint of dark circles. Peptides are protein fragments that act by increasing lymphatic circulation and decreasing capillary permeability. They help reduce fluid buildup and permanently decongest puffiness.
Rich in antioxidants, turmeric is valued for its soothing and protective properties. It fights against external aggressions and helps prevent the appearance of signs of fatigue. Turmeric extract helps brighten and soothe the delicate eye area, for visibly brighter and more rested eyes. The OPTIM-EYES range consists of two treatments dedicated to preventing and reducing dark circles: The effectiveness of the OPTIM-EYES moisturizing gel against signs of eye fatigue makes it one of FILORGA Laboratories' must-haves. Its formula simultaneously targets dark circles, puffiness, and fine lines, while incorporating anti-fatigue active ingredients that help compensate for the effects of sleep deprivation and revive the radiance of the eye contour. Suitable for all skin types, even sensitive, this treatment also stands out for its fresh, melting gel-cream texture, which intensely hydrates without leaving a greasy film. OPTIM-EYES MASK is an express anti-fatigue solution designed to instantly restore radiance to tired eyes. Its formula, enriched with peptides, hyaluronic acid and antioxidants from turmeric, acts simultaneously on dark circles, puffiness and wrinkles for a smoothing and rejuvenating effect visible from the first application. This mask, perfectly suited to sensitive skin, also stands out for its texture: it is made from 100% natural lyocell fibers sourced from eucalyptus leaves, an ultra-stretchy fabric that molds to the shape of the eye contour to optimize the diffusion of active ingredients and enhance the effectiveness of the treatment.
